Benjamin lived at Orange, VT until 1865 when he moved to Montpelier where he died at 86. He was a Lawyer, elected to the Vermont Legislature, chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He declined a nomination to Congress in 1884, and was a delegate to the Republican convention that year. He declined an appointment to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Morrill, but declined due to the ill health of his wife, who died the next year. General Notes: Child - Colonel Huse
Served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was drafted and mustered 17 July 1863, assigned to Co. E, erd Vermont Regiment. He was sent to Boston, remained about 9 weeks in consequence of poor eyesight, when he was sent back to Brattleboro with orders from Surgeon General Dale to be discharged. He remained about a month, and was ordered front by Dr. Phelps to report to Col. Seaver of the 3rd Regiment. He was detailed 29 Dec 1863 as teamster in 2nd Vermont Brigade, which duty he preformed until 3 Dec 1865, when he again joined his regiment and engaged with them in the closing battles of the war. He was chosen Corp. 27 June 1865, adn mustered out 11 Jul 1865. He was granted a pension for disability due to service in the field. It is not clear where he got the title 'Col' since it appears that he was only a Corporal in the war. (per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation six page 70 printed Jul 22, 1999)

Robert lived at Huvelton, NY. and married but had no children according to Henry Fifield of Montpelier. The 1850 census found him and his brother James in Oswegatchie, not far from Huvelton. However, it is obvious from all records that he did indeed have children. He indicated that he was born in NH.
The New York State census of 1865 says that he was married twice, his wife was married once, and she was the mother of two children. It also says his wife was born in VT. He was warned out of Bethel, Windsor, VT, 2 Sep 1817. He left a will on 22 Feb 1877 in Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence, NY; Robert left everything to daughter and executrix Martha Jane Fifield. No one else was mentioned. Witnesses were John Mclaren and W.J. Allen of Oswegatchie. (as per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation six page 18 of 79 printed out Jul 22, 1999)

General Notes: Child - Henry Lyman Fifield
Henry enlisted in the 11th Regiment NH Volunteers, birthplace Salisbury (no state), residence Deerfield. He was discharged disabled on July 28, 1863 in Cairo, IL. Henry was in the Medical Corps; according to his pension record he contracted syphilus from an infected soldier he was treating and this infection was the reason for his discharge. A disposition by his widow indicates that Henry died of typhoid fever. His application for a disability pension was disallowed on the basis that his condition was not service-related, but his widow was eventually granted a pension. S. L. Fifield appears in Bangor, ME in the 1850 census with wife Mary and 3 children, one of whom is Samuel S. who became a prominent figure in Wisconsin. Samuel S. was a son of Samuel S. aand Naomi Pease and was said to have largely passed his boyhood from the age of 8 with an uncle in Bangor after have been born in Corina, ME.
It is also stated that he was descended from prominent revolutionary ancestors thereby leading strongly back to Colonel Nathaniel.
In a "History of Fifield Family" by Charles L. Fifield of Janesville, WI it says that Samuel (1801) moved to Garland with his father in 1811, but returned to Weare to live with his uncle Jonathan Greeley from the ages of 16 to 21. He then returned to Maine and built a hotel a Morse's Corners in Corina, and removed to Bangor in 1840 where he was in the lumber business "Fifield and Hunt". In 1853 he went west, returned to Massachusetts for a short time, then back to Wisconsin where he lived with son Samuel until his death. Samuel has numerous writeups in Wisconsin history. In 1853 he and his father removed west, ending up in Wisconsin. Samuel became a newspaperman and held various political offices becoming at last Lieutenant Governor of the State. The town of Fifield in northern Wisconsin is named for him, although he did not live there. (per Peter Fifield Wells website generation seven page 114 printed July 22, 1999)
In 1853 his father, his younger brother and he removed to Rock Island, Illinois and the next spring they settled in Prescott, Wisconsin. In 1859/60 he started his career in journalism and int 1862 purchased the Polk County Press where he was working at the time. His ringing editorials of the Civil War were a noted feature of the paper. In spring of 1872 he sold the paper, moved to Ashland, Wisconsin and with his brother started the Ashland Express.
Eventually Samuel became interested in politics. He held offices at Osceola and was chairman of the first Ashland County Board of Supervisors. From 1870 to 1872 he was Sergeant-at-Arms at the state Assembly. In 1874 he was elected Assemblyman and re-elected in 1875 and 1876. In 1876, he became Assembly Speaker and was elected to fill an unexpired term of Senator. He was re-elected in 1879 and while Senator was nominated for and elected in 1881 to the office of Lieutenant Governor. In 1883 he was re-elected and by virture of a constitutional amendment remained in office an additional year. (per Fifield Flyer v.1:1 page 2 Jan 1994)

The town of Fifield in northern Wisconsin is named for him, although he did not live there. (per Peter Fifield Wells website generation seven page 114 printed July 22, 1999)
In 1853 his father, his younger brother and he removed to Rock Island, Illinois and the next spring they settled in Prescott, Wisconsin. In 1859/60 he started his career in journalism and int 1862 purchased the Polk County Press where he was working at the time. His ringing editorials of the Civil War were a noted feature of the paper. In spring of 1872 he sold the paper, moved to Ashland, Wisconsin and with his brother started the Ashland Express.
Eventually Samuel became interested in politics. He held offices at Osceola and was chairman of the first Ashland County Board of Supervisors. From 1870 to 1872 he was Sergeant-at-Arms at the state Assembly. In 1874 he was elected Assemblyman and re-elected in 1875 and 1876. In 1876, he became Assembly Speaker and was elected to fill an unexpired term of Senator. He was re-elected in 1879 and while Senator was nominated for and elected in 1881 to the office of Lieutenant Governor. In 1883 he was re-elected and by virture of a constitutional amendment remained in office an additional year. (per Fifield Flyer v.1:1 page 2 Jan 1994)
