General Notes: Husband - Thomas Henry Harris

History of Clay County

Captain Thomas Harris was born in southern Indiana, and until his marriage remained with his parents. He subsequently lived for several years in Vigo county, very near Terre Haute, which was then but a small hamlet. He afterwards returned to Sugar Ridge township, where he spent much of his early life, and there cleared and improved a farm, doing his work with oxen. There were no markets in this vicinity, and he used to build flatboats, load them with produce from his farm and then take them down the Eel, White, Wabash, Ohio, and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, where he would dispose of both cargo and boats, making his way home as best he could. It was while sailing these home-made crafts that he obtained his title of "captain." When quite well advanced in years the Captain on account of ill health went to Iowa to consult a physician, and died at the home of a son in Des Moines. His wife, whose maiden name was Lucinda Witham, spent her last years on the old homestead at Sugar Ridge township, dying soon after the close of the Civil War.

History of Vigo County

Thomas Harris, was born in October 1806, and died in Des Moines, IA, while on a visit trying to regain his health in 1873. He came with his father to Owen County, Ind, then to Clay County, and afterward to Terre Haute when but two families were living in the place. During the time of his residence in Terre Haute he helped build the first pork-house in the city. In his younger days he was a boatman, making two trips each winter from Terre Haute to New Orleans, after which he became a contractor. He took some extensive contracts on the Wabash and Erie Canal, the Vandalia Railroad, the New Albany & Salem Railroad, the Evansville & Terre Haute Railroad, the White River Dam, the foundation of the Gasport Depot, and many others, and for several years he was in partnership with A.D. McMaster. In connection with contracting, Mr. Harris also owned considerable farming interests in Vigo County. In politics he was formerly a Whig, afterward a Republican, and he was a member of the Masonic fraternity. His wife, who was Lucinda Witham, a daughter of Peter Witham, was born in North Carolina, about the year 1810, and died in Clay County in 1867. Peter Witham, who was a soldier in the Revolution, participating in many battles, was by occupation a farmer, and an early settler of Indiana. Mrs. Harris was a member of the Methodist Church, but in later years united with the Dunkard Church. The marrisge of Mr. and Mrs. Harris was blessed with eight children, three of whom are living, as follows: John; Alga D., a farmer in Clay county; and Eliza, wife of George Carrithers.

Beulah D. Witham • 1923 - 2005

Beulah D. Witham, 81, Bismarck, formerly of Minot, ND, died Friday, August 12, 2005.

Beulah Doris Irwin was born on November 10, 1923, the daughter of Ray and Ada (Harry) Irwin in Minot, North Dakota. She was raised and educated in the Sawyer/South Prairie area where she attended the Bieghle School.

Beulah was united in marriage to Robert Witham on March 23, 1947, in Surrey. They resided in Minot, Fort Bragg, NC, and Nampa, ID. They moved back to Minot in 1951 and then to Parshall in 1952, where together they raised their four children, Sheri, Bobbi, Voni, and Lana. Later they divorced. In 1967 Beulah and her four girls moved to Minot. She continued to reside in Minot until 2003, when she moved to Bismarck and was cared for by her daughters. Robert passed away in 1984.

Beulah was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone during the World War II years. She then stayed at home to raise her children. When all of her children had started school Beulah started employment with Parshall Rexall Drug. After moving to Minot, she was employed at Americana Nursing Home and later at Trinity Nursing Home as a nurses' aide until retiring in 1984.

Beulah and her loyal Schnauzer "Cache" enjoyed daily walks together and each others companionship. She enjoyed reading and baking for her grandchildren. She never missed one of her grandchildren's activities. Beulah enjoyed lifelong, loving relationships with her sisters Mickey and Ruby and with her cousins and friends from Parshall and Minot. She was known for her Irish wit, sense of humor and her value of hard work.

Beulah loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to be a stay at home mom because she was able to raise and take care of her four daughters. She continued that care with her grandchildren. Recently, Beulah's daughters chose to return that love by caring for her in their homes. Beulah had a quiet, enduring trust in her "Good Lord." Her entire family has felt very fortunate and blessed to have her in their lives.

Surviving family includes:
daughters, Sheri Speare, Coeur d'Alene, ID, Bobbi Brotton, Bismarck, Voni Slind, Garrison, and Lana (Dave) Parizek, Minot; grandchildren, Dr. Melissa Brotton, Heidi (Jeremy) Hudson, Ben (Jennifer) Slind, Joshua Slind, Jessica Parizek, Tess Nally, Ashley Slind, Chelsea Parizek, and Allison Parizek; sister, Ruby (Raymond) Newman, Minot, sister-in-law Frances Irwin, Tacoma WA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, her infant brother Glenn, her brother, Lloyd and his wife Lena Irwin, her brother Clifford Irwin, and her sister, Addie "Mickey" Sambor, and her husband Paul Sambor.

seems to be a disagreement on the parents of this John Lee, maybe what I have down here or maybe Col Richard Lee II and wife Anne Constable, or as Freda Hays lfhays@myexcel.com of Edmond OK says they dont know the parents "There is nothing worse than putting genealogy on the web with unproved facts." I do not know who is right or wrong so provide all sides as best as I can, Linda Long
