EAST MILLINOCKET – James "Jimmy" Provenzano, 96, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at a Millinocket hospital. He was born Nov. 20, 1913, in Plantania, Italy, son of Felix and Carolina (Bonadio) Provenzano. Jimmy worked for Great Northern Paper Co., East Millinocket, for many years and retired from there. He enjoyed working with radios and electronics, as well as guns and going target shooting. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Thompson of East Millinocket; two granddaughters, Ann White and her husband, Mark, of West Enfield and Mary Hanson and her husband, Joel, of Enfield; five great-grandchildren, Sam Lyons, Stephanie Currie, Laycee White, Christopher Hanson and Rachel Hanson; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Jimmy was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Ianello) Provenzano; a sister, Mary Bonadio; and a brother, Michael Provenzano. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at Lamson Funeral Home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket. She was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Toronto, the daughter of Vincenzo and Maria (Natale) Iannello. When Mary was an infant, her father passed away from a sudden illness, so she returned to Italy with her mother. She came to the U.S. in 1936 to help her sister with raising her family in East Millinocket. While living in East Millinocket, she met the love of her life, James V. Provenzano. Mary moved to Pennsylvania and worked at a nylon factory, but she soon returned to East Millinocket and married "Jimmy," and together they raised their family and shared 68 years of marriage. Mary loved to cook and no one ever left her house hungry. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church, East Millinocket. Mary also enjoyed working in her garden with her husband and always looked forward to and enjoyed family get-togethers. In addition to her husband, James V. Rhys ap Tewdwr (d 1093), king of Deheubarth; grandson of Cadell ab Ein
ion ab Owain ap Hywel Dda. In 1075 he took possession of Deheubarth on t
he death of his second-cousin, Rhys ab Owain ab Edwin. In 1081 he was disl
odged by Caradog ap Gruffydd, but later in the year, with the help of Gruf
fudd ap Cynan, he was firmly reinstated after the historic battle of Myny
dd Carn. In the same year William the Conqueror made a demonstration of po
wer in South Cymru, traversing the lad as faras S Davids; it is reasonab
ly certain that during the visit the two kings came to an agreeme
nt as to their future good relations, which lasted to the endof William
's reign. A few years later it is recorded that Rhys is paying theking £
40 a year for Deheubarth, thereby becoming a vassal of the Norman Crown a
nd establishing a precedent with lasting consequences on Anglo-Welsh relat
ions. Henceforth, with the exception of the closing tragedy of his caree
r, Rhys had only to contend with the jealousies of his fellow prince
s. In 1088 he was attacked by the young rulers of Powys and was oblig
ed to seek refuge inIreland, but he soon returned and, with Danish hel
p, decisively defeated hisopponents. Again in 1091 he was opposed by a gr
oup of his own vassals in Dyfed, who sought to restore the kingship to t
he senior line of Hywel Dda in theperson of Gruffydd ap Maredudd ap Owai
n. At Llandudoch (St. Dogmaels) on theTeifi the rebels were defeated a
nd Gruffydd killed. Meanwhile the Norman conquest of the south had gather
ed a new momentum after William's death in 1087,and among the territori
es then being over-run was the old kingdom of Brycheiniog. It was while re
sisting the Norman advance in this all-important approach to his own domin
ion that Rhys was killed in uncertain circumstances near Aberhonddu (Breco
n). He was virtmaclly the last of the ancient kings of Deheubarth, a
nd it was in a different political setting that the power of the dynasty w
as eventually revived by his grandson - Rhys ap Gruffydd. He m Gwladus, da
ughter of Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn. He was survived by two sons, Gruffydd ap Rh

Rhys ap Twedwr (d 1093), Welsh king, was the son of Tewdwr ap Cade
ll ab Einon ab Owain ap Hywel Dda. Late authorities such as David Powel a
nd Lewis Dwnn, omit Cadell, and by making Rhys a son of Tewdwr ab Einon w
ho died about 994, would have it understood he performed the active dee
ds of his short reign between the ages of ninety and a hundred. He beca
me king of South Cymru on the death of Rhys ab Owain hissecond cousi
n, in 1078; according to the untrustworthy 'Gwentian Brut,' he came from B
rittany; but 'Brut Ieuan Brechfa,' another late authority, says it was fr
om Ireland, while other Bruts give no hint that he was an exile at all.F
or two or three years after his accession he was harassed by the attac
ks of Caradog ap Gruffydd ap Rhydderch, who had now made himself mast
er of the greater part of Gwent and Morgannwg. According to the twelfth-ce
ntury life of Gruffydd ap Cynan (1055?-1137), that prince found him in 108
1, when he landedat Porth Clais, near St David's, a refugee in the cathed
ral precincts, willing to promise homage and the half of his realm to Gruf
fydd in return for assistance. While this part of the story may have be
en coloured by the biographer's provincial zeal, it is certain the two pri
nces marched together against Caradog ap Gruffydd, Trahaern ap Caradog, a
nd Meilyr ap Rhiwallon, who met themat Mynydd Carn, a place not year iden

Gruffydd ap Rhys (c 1090-1137), prince of Deheubarth; son of Rhys ap Tewd
wr and Gwladus, daughter of Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn. When the old South Cym
ru monarchy disintegrated on the fall of Rhys ap Tewdwr in 1093, Gruffyd
d, the infant heir, was taken to Ireland where hewas given asylum duri
ng childhood and early manhood. When he returned in 1113, the patriotic su
pport of his younger countrymen was made useless by the cautious condu
ct of elements as yet indisposed to resist the Norman monarchy, includi
ng Gruffudd ap Cynan, who was prepared to hand his young kinsman over to H
enry I when in 1115 he sought sanctmacry in Gwynedd. The failure of the re
sistance movement which reached its climax in the open rebellion of 1116 w
as inevitable. Gruffydd ap Rhys nevertheless reached an accommodation wi
th Henry and was given land in the commote of Caco. Apart from a brief int
ermissionin 1127, involving a second exile in Ireland, he appears to ha
ve lived a quiet existence there until after Henry's death. There al
so no doubt were b Maredudd and Rhys, his sons by Gwenllian, daughter of G
ruffudd ap Cynan, Anarawd and Cadell being evidently children of an earli
er union. In the general revolt which spread throughout Cymru when Henry d
., he took a prominent part, being present at the decisive battle of Cr
ug Mawr in 1136. In the following year he d., predeceased by the redoubtab
le Gwenllian. It fell to the lot of his youngest son, Rhys (1132-1197
), to rebuild the family fortunes.

1123 In this year Calixtus II approved the cult of Dewi Sant. And Gruf
fudd apRhys slew Gruffudd ap Sulhaearn.
1127 In this year Gruffudd ap Rhys was expelled by king Henry from t
he portion of land which the king had given him, because he had been accus
ed without cause by the French who were dwelling along with him. And at t
he close of the year died Daniel, son of Sulien, bishop of Menevia, the m
an who was mediator between Gwynedd and Powys; and none had found fault wi
th him but rather he was beloved by all.
1137 In this year died Gruffudd ap Rhys, the light and excellence a
nd strength of all South Cymru. AndGruffudd ap Cynan, prince of Gwynedd a
nd head and king and defender and pacifier of all Cymru, ended his tempor
al life in Christ after receiving extreme unction and communion and confes
sion and repentance for his sins, and becoming a monk and making a good e
nd in his perfect old age. And for a third time the sons of Gruffudd ap Cy
nan came to Ceredigion and burned castles.

Gruffydd ab Rhys (d 1137), king or prince of South Cymru (Deheubarth
), was brought up in Ireland, where in his childhood he had fled with h
is kinsfolkafter the defeat and death of his father Rhys ab Tewdwr, at t
he hands of Bernard of Neufmarche in 1093. On that fatal day 'fell the kin
gdom of the Britons,' and nearly all Rhys old kingdom was seized by Norm
an adventurers. Nest, Rhys' daughter became the bride of Gerald of Windso
r, steward of Pembroke. When Gruffydd had grown up to mandhood he became w
