Here's what I have relative to the Dewings:
Stephen and Eva Dewing were the owners of the large lot at Parker and Ellsworth by 1903, the year that the first house, Corner House, was built on what is now the Collective’s land. Corner House was designed by a San Francisco architect, F.B. Wood, and built by Joseph Francis at a cost of $3,093. The house was originally built with gaslights—the plumbing for the original lights is still in the walls. The Dewings were originally from Connecticut, where he had been a farmer.
By the turn of the century, the 2200 block of Parker was part of the growing city of Berkeley—the city limit had previously been Fulton Street. Although private water company lines had been laid in the streets, water availability remained iffy until the formation of EBMUD in the 1920s. Perhaps for that reason, a 25 or 30 foot deep, brick-lined well was dug in the backyard (it’s still there, covered by a steel plate, partially underneath the back porch of the Ellsworth house). The water was pumped by windmill to a large wooden tank surmounting the heavy framing timbers and brick foundation of the Water Tower.
The Dewings kept their horses in a 1½ story stable/carriage house in the backyard, where the vegetable garden grows now. A tennis court, surrounded by persimmon trees, lay where the Parker house now stands.

Henry Dewing, who was Stephen and Eva’s son, was Ms. Davis’ professor of Latin at U.C. Berkeley, circa 1908, and also taught at Berkeley High School.
Eva Dewing had the 2239-41 Parker and 2538-40 Ellsworth houses built in 1908 as rental properties. (Her relationship to her husband at this time is unclear—he’s shown in the 1910 census as living with her and a son and daughter in Berkeley, with the address mis-stated as 2540 Dana rather than 2550 Ellsworth—and he appears a second time in the 1910 census living near Walnut Creek with a son, apparently involved in ranching. At the time, he was 62 and she was 57.) One assumes that she must have wanted to use the land to generate income for herself. Interestingly, if that was her purpose, she chose to build very fine houses designed by one of the most prominent architects in the state, Joseph Cather Newsom. Joseph and his brother Samuel built many well-known houses up and down the state, such as the elaborate Carson House in Eureka.
The exterior designs of the two houses are essentially the same, except reversing right and left, but the interior layouts are different and the Parker House was built with a semi-finished attic. As with Corner House, each had a stained cedar shingle exterior and, originally, also a cedar shingle roof. The Parker and Ellsworth houses were each built from the outset as an upstairs and downstairs two-family duplex and each cost $4,000 to construct. The houses include nice architectural details, such as the clinker brick fireplaces and chimneys, redwood exterior faux beams, oak floors with walnut inlays, redwood wainscoting with built-in cabinets, coved ceilings, redwood flower boxes outside the second floor windows, and redwood gutters. ...On the east side of the front yard, a beautiful tennis court was the fence between us and the corner house that now stands where a Professor Dewing lived. He taught for a while in the Berkeley high school, then went to teach in Greece. Across the street, Ellsworth, was a large body of water, coming from the U.C. There my brother had a raft and had fun sailing about. The water went under a bridge crossing across Parker and flowed under the place where the present church now stands. Tules covered the ground growing semi-circular; tules grew and some held water inside them and some were dry.
...That was the Dewing’s place. Henry Dewing [and Stephen and Eva, who were his parents, and several siblings]. That house on the corner was theirs. He had a horse. He used to ride horses.
LC: You said he was a professor at Berkeley? JD: He taught Latin. LC: You took Latin from him? JD: Mmm-hmm. And then he moved away.
One of the girls wrote a poem:
Henry Dewing, This is he, Member of the faculty. How wise he looks, Surrounded by his weighty books. [she laughs]
He moved way to Athens, I think it was, and taught at the university. He was a nice young fellow
LC: What else did they have over there? That’s a big lot. There’s the tennis court and the corner house. Did they have a stable or something like that for the horse?
JD: They must have had, there in the back. They had the whole corner there. [A photograph from 1939 shows a 1½ story garage in the area where the garden now is behind 2239—the driveway to it came from Ellsworth. Prior to the garage, it may have been a stable. There had also been a two-car garage dating back to at least 1929 where the corner house patio now is, but that garage may have been built at a later date.]

Dewing, W. H., M.D. was born in Litchfield, Herkimer county, NY, June 4, 1858, and was educated in Whitesboro Seminary and Hannemann Medical College of Philadelphia from which he was graduated in 1882. In 1885 he settled in Clayville, where he has since carried on the practice of his profession. Dr. Dewing is a son of George and Mary (Ball) Dewing, and his granfather came from New England to Litchfield about 100 years ago. Dr. Dewing married Olive E. Van Auken, by whom he has two children: George and Ethel Mary. He is a member of the Oneida County Homoepathic Medical Society, and has been president of that organization. Carole A. (DeWitt) Jacobs, 66, wife of Elwin "Sutt" Jacobs, went home to be with the Lord peacefully Jan. 2, 2011, surrounded by her family, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. She was born Sept. 11, 1944, in Boothbay Harbor, daughter of Ralph "Drake" DeWitt and Margaret E. (Noddin) DeWitt. Carole worked in the bakery at Hannaford for 17 years. Her other employment was with Lennie's Superette, Medway School Department and Lounsbury's. Her biggest joys were her grandchildren and taking care of her family. She enjoyed crocheting and going for long Saturday rides – teedles. She loved shopping at Marden's, any one of them, and was known by her husband as a "loon" shopper. In addition to her husband, Sutt, she is survived by three daughters, Dawn and Blane York of Medway, Patricia Jacobs and Joe Lavoie of Millinocket, and Michele and Leroy Charette of Medway; her pride and joy, her six grandchildren, Cody, Chris, Joey, Dylan, Mallory and Cameron; four brothers, Robert and Nellie DeWitt of Medway, Richard and Betsy DeWitt of South Paris, Neal and Jill DeWitt of East Millinocket, and David and Nancy DeWitt of Millinocket; a "special younger" sister, Linda Elward of Medway; a sister-in-law, Gerry DeWitt of Medway; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an older brother, William DeWitt; and a brother-in-law, John Elward. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday at Calvary Temple-Assembly of God, 2 Orchard St., East Millinocket, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Regginal Adams and the Rev. Mark W. York officiating. Spring interment will be at Grindstone Road Cemetery.

Jabez died at the home of his son Jabez in East Machias, Maine, in 1810, "ae. 93." The ancestry of this man, the founder of the Machias branch of the family, has long been debated. The names of the men in the family would lead one to suppose that they originated from the Moses branch, but the only space that he fits in is as the the son of John. He migrated to Nova Scotia in 1760 at the same time that a number of the DeWolfe family went, and it may be that he was put in charge of his mother's family. He settled around Kingsport and Canard, but after about ten years sold out his holdings of 250 acres, including 150 acres of dyked marsh which stretched across the Canard and Habitant R., for ten pounds, a suit of clothes and a beaver hat. The reason he gave for selling was, "The upland is no good, it has no stones in it." He went to what is now the state of Maine, where his descendants still live among the stones he found growing there. He went with David Gardner to Machias, and settled near Gardner's Lake, where he and Gardner owned a mill together.
The tradition at Machias states that his wife was a Caldwell, but another writer claims that she was a Longfellow. The son Frederick without doubt married a Caldwell, and many confuse the father with the son as a first settler.
Jabez Huntley served in the Revolutionary War from 14 Sep 1775 to 13 Dec 1775 as sergeant in Capt. Smith's company. Was reduced to private 1 Nov 1775. Company stationed at Machias, Lincoln Co., for the defence of the seacoast. Also priv. in Capt. Jos. Sevey's co., Col. Benj. Foster's regiment, from 5 Dec to 25 Dec 1778. He was among the men who were paid a bounty of one pound each at Machias 18 Oct 1777 for enlistment in the service of the U.S. by Col. John Allen. Mrs. Elizabeth Sanborn in her writing states that the tradition exists that General Warren died in his arms at the Battle of Bunker Hill [NEHGR 101:59].
