William joined Old Tennent Presbyterian Church (Monmouth Co NJ) on June 8, 1735 and his wife, Rebecca, joined the next year. Therefore, it is suggested that they married in the intervening time. Rebecca is known to have died in the 1750's and William, after marrying Elizabeth Cox, died intestate in 1773; Elizabeth was appointed administrator of his estate on March 27, 1773, so William must have died in EARLY 1773.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Ansley

Mary Ansley, wife of Job Morris, was sister to Thomas, Benjamin, Rebecca and William Ansley, Jr. Thomas married in Monmouth County then moved to Warren County, GA. Mary and Job also married in Monmouth County and Mary moved to Warren County with the children after Job died. It was in Warren County, Ga where Thomas' son Abel Ansley and Mary's daughter Lydia Morris (first cousins) married on January 30, 1790. Jimmy Carter is descended from Abel and Lydia through their daughter Ann Ansley who married Wiley Carter. Wiley and Ann Carter's son, Littleberry Walker Carter, married Mary Ann Diligent Seals and moved to Sumter County, GA. Jimmy is their great grandson. When Thomas moved to Georgia, he settled in Wrightsboro, a community Royal Govenor Wright gave to emigrating Quakers for religious freedom, thereby giving Augusta a buffer from the Indians. Thomas fought in the Revolution and when he returned from the war the elders would no longer let him live in Wrightsboro (anti-war, anti-violence, royalists that they were). As a result Thomas bought land just outside Wrightsboro and built a house for his family, known as the Rock House, which still stands and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Thomas moved from Monmouth Co., New Jersey after November 1760 to Orange Co., North Carolina. He moved from North Carolina to Wrightsboro (a Quaker village begun in 1768) Warren Co., Georgia before 1773. Thomas constructed a stone home in the early 1780's similar to homes found in New Jersey at that time. Thomas completed this home in 1785. This home is now called The Rock House and has been completely restored and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The three story field stone home, with it's original floor plan intact, is unique for Georgia and is the oldest house in the state. It is part of the annual Ansley Reunion.

Thomas Ansley (1737-1809) served as private in Georgia Line. He was born in England; died in Warren County, Ga.

Early Wrightsboro Township Landholders, Residents and Associated Families, 1768-1810

Thomas and his brothers Benjamin and William moved South arouns 1765, stopping for a time in Hillsboro, North Carolina. There he met Joseph Maddock, the Quake r leader, and went to Georgia with the Quakers in 1768. There is no record of t he Ansleys being Quakers, but they were closely associated with them, and both Thomas and Benjamin received town lots in Wrightsboro, when the town was founde d. During the revolution, Thomas served as a forager and drover for the Army and was given bounty grants for his services by the State. He applied for othe r tracts, and eventually owned around 4500 acres in Wilkes and Richmond countie s. The part of Wilkes County in which he lived became Warren County in 1793, an d McDuffie in 1870. From "Here's History of Old Rock House", a pamphlet by P earl Baker "The oldest house in McDuffie County, the Old Rock House, was built by Thomas Ansley between 1782 and 1785. Thomas Ansley was born in New Jersey, the son of William, an English weaver by trade. He was baptized in the Old Tenn ant Presbyterian Church in 1737, and married Rebecca Cocke (Cox) in 1760 in Mon mouth, NJ. He and his brothers Benjamin and William and their families travele d south around 1765 and lived a short time in Hillsboro, NC. It was here that h e met Joseph Murdock, the Quaker leader, and came to Georgia with the Quakers i n 1768. William Ansley moved to South Carolina, and later to Lincoln County. D uring the Revolution, Thomas served as a forager and drover for the Army and wa s given bounty grants for his services by the State. He built his house after the fashion of the ones he had known in New Jersey, with inside chimneys and ot her details common to these houses. It has a basement room, with a large firepl ace, where it is believed the family cooked its meals. On the next floor are tw o large rooms, two a little smaller, and a "birthing" or sick room, where ailin g members of the group could be cared for, but still be out of the way. This ro om has a most unusual fireplace. Family tradition states that when the house w as built, entry was achieved by a ladder, which could be drawn up into the hous e in times of trouble such as Indian attacks; the present porches are a later a ddition. The rock walls of the house are twenty-four inches thick of fieldstone , and give a truly fortress-like appearance." The house is owned by the Wrig htsboro Foundation and has been completely restored. 1768 Arrived in Georg ia with the first group of Quakers. 1785 Built a rock house that is now a nati onal historic site. 29 DEC 1970 The Old Rock House placed on the National Reg ister of Historic Sites. General Notes: Child - Thomas Ansley

General Notes: Child - Benjamin Ansley

Benjamin came from NJ with his wife and two daughters and, in 1773, asked for land on "Upton Creek", south of Little River. The creek referred to was probably Maddox Creek, a branch of Uptons.
GENDEX (9/97) lists DOD as 'before 5 JUN 1783 Savannah GA'.

: Brothers Thomas and Benjamin Ansley, though not themselves Quakers, were closely associated with the Wrightsborough settlement from its start. Thomas built the famous Rock House, the only original structure from the Wrightsborough period still standing. In addition the Ansleys married into a number of Wrightsborough Quaker families, including, the Coxes, the Morrises and the Sanders. Benjamin is believed to have come to Georgia with his brothers Thomas before 1773, however some sources state that he did not arrive until 1773. He remained in the Wrightsboro area (now Thomson, McDuffie Co.) for about five years before moving to Chatham Co., Georgia in 1778.

General Notes: Child - Mary Ansley

"In early life he engaged in farming and in school teaching and in 1790or thereabouts moved to Newport and opened a country store corner ofFrank and Thames Street. In 1796-8 he purchased the building latelyknown as 135-7 Thames Street. He continued successfully for severalyears but later sold out to his son William, who at the death of Job in1848 took in his brother, David, as partner and turned the store into astraight dry goods, first along keeping largely to men's goods, but laterwhen clothing stores (mens) but their trade, he took in all parts ofstaple dry and fancy goods."

"I only remember of the original stock when it was a general store, theCrockery. This Job, my grandfather, was a consistent Quaker, never helda public office, but was prominent in meeting affairs. He was a goodbusinessman, an original trustee of the Newport Savings Bank. He marriedDecember 9, 1795, Alice Anthony, daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Anthony ofPortsmouth. She dies March 11, 1826.

General Notes: Child - Albert Sherman

He learned the sail maker's trade, and married Catherine Marble, one ofseven sisters, but being delicate, the family decided to open a millinerystore. This in my younger days was a great success. Aunt Katie was thebookkeeper. Sophy and Annie the shopclerks and the older girls sewed andbraided the straw and trimmed the hats and bonnets. These were the dayswhen you made things at home. Uncle Albert furnished the brains and didthe buying. The girls the work with their hands, good team work.

General Notes: Child - Edward A. Sherman

"Father after clerking it for Grandpa and Uncle William, bought thepremises then number 76 side Thames Street nearly opposite the old storeof Uncle William which was on the East side. This was in 1842 and so hewas keeping store and living overhead with a fine garden in the rear. Myfather and mother were fine florists and we always had plenty of flowerswhere other people did not have them, and we also generally had avegetable garden, somewhere in the neighborhood, which in later yearsfell to my care. Hence my experience and love of that kind of work. Butwe children were never allowed to have chickens or dogs as pets onlysometimes a cat or a canary and generally not at the same time for fearof consequences. We did for some time have some pigeons when I was say12 years old."
