Joseph Prejean , son of Jean and Andree, was born at Port Royal in 1696. Joseph married Marie-Louise Como (Comeaux) on September 28, 1723. Marie-Louise was the daughter of Abraham Como and Marguerite Pitre. In 1765, four sons of Joseph reached Louisiana with one of the several Acadian exile groups arriving that year. All four brothers, Armand, Joseph, Charles, and Basile , were assigned land on the west bank of the Mississippi River, probably near the present city of Donaldsonville. For unknown reasons, both Armand and Charles soon left the area to re-settle in the Attakapas District, whereas Joseph and Basile remained in the area.
Armand, the elder of the brothers, arrived in Louisiana with his first wife, Madeleine Martin, two daughters, and three sons,
* Martin,
* Joseph, and
* Andre.
After settling in the colony, he fathered three more daughters by Madeleine. He also fathered three additional children by his second wife, Marie Theriot. Dominique Prejean was one of those later three children. From this line of Prejean's, the Teche-Opelousas clan of Prejeans continues in Louisiana.

'The Great Migration...' gives a list of the heirs of Thomas Prence who on 10 June 1676, through their attorney Josiah Winslow, sold to Constant Southworth, treasurer and agent of Plymouth Colony, 'all that our dwelling house, messuage or tenement' in Plymouth 'at a place commonly called Plain Dealing'. Among the names were Jonathan Sparrow and Hannah his wife, daughter of Thomas Prence. [Plymouth Colony Land Records 4:124] 'Boston Transcript Gen. Notes, Queries & Answers' of 16 May 1938 says he was son of Richard and Pandora Sparrow and his will is in 'Pope's Pioneers' probated 11 Oct 1674, age given 86. Other references given, Eastham Records, Anc. Landmarks of Plymouth, Mayflower Desc 14, Freeman Gen. and Foster Records by Stephen Foster. The will must be that of the father, Richard, as that age would make him born 1588, 40 years older than Hannah.

The FGRA sheets named children of the first wife as Thomas, Rebecca, Hannah and Mercy; those of the second wife, Jane, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Judith. 'The Great Migration Begins', a NEHGS study project published in 1995, says 'Establishing the probable date of marriage for Apphia and Thomas Prence has significant implications for the parentage of Prence's last three children. Apphia is last seen as a Freeman 1 July 1644, about a year before the birth of Prence's seventh child, and at the end of a six-year hiatus in the birthdates of his chidren. She is called 'Mrs. Freeman' as late as 15 October 1646 in a deed where she appears as an abutter, but this does not necessarily imply that she had not remarried by this date, since it was not unusual for archaic bounds to be used in this sort of description [Sandwich Land Records 1:78].' Apphia may have been mother of his last three children, Judith, 1645, Elizabeth, 1647, and Sarah, 1648. I have temporarily removed the last three children and changed the data on the others to fit with this source.

Prence, Jr.' 'The Great Migration...' says she was 'former wife of Samuel Freeman, daughter of William Quick of London [TAG 11:178]. .... 'In a letter dated at Plymouth 8 June 1647, Thomas Prence wrote to John Winthrop that 'since my parting company [with you] I have almost met with Jacob's trial in his travel between Bethel and Ephrath: God's having been heavy upon my wife and that for diverse months and is not yet removed' [Winthrop Papers 5:169]. Prence, Jr.' The sheet of the second marriage was submitted by Huberta F. Robison, 1806 A Bonita, Berkeley 4, Calif. Her sources were 'Hist. Cape Cod. p 363 and New Eng. Reg. Vol. 6 p 234. The FGRA sheets named children of the first wife as Thomas, Rebecca, Hannah and Mercy; those of the second wife, Jane, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Judith. 'The Great Migration Begins', a NEHGS study project published in 1995, says 'Establishing the probable date of marriage for Apphia and Thomas Prence has significant implications for the parentage of Prence's last three children. Apphia is last seen as a Freeman 1 July 1644, about a year before the birth of Prence's seventh child, and at the end of a six-year hiatus in the birthdates of his chidren. She is called 'Mrs. Freeman' as late as 15 October 1646 in a deed where she appears as an abutter, but this does not necessarily imply that she had not remarried by this date, since it was not unusual for archaic bounds to be used in this sort of description [Sandwich Land Records 1:78].' Apphia may have been mother of his last three children, Judith, 1645, Elizabeth, 1647, and Sarah, 1648. I have temporarily removed the last three children and changed the data on the others to fit with this source.

"[Deobrah's father] Stephen's will names 'granddaughter Kezia.' It is almost certain that she is not a legitimate child of any of Stephen's children. It is virtually certain that she is the Kezia who married Edmund Freeman of Sandwhich. Frederick Freeman, FREEMEN GEN, 1875m p 45 calls her Kezia PRESBURY but does not name her parents.
"One theory is that she is the daughter of Stephen Presbury before he married Deborah Skeffe. If their gravestones are correct this seems very unlikely. If Stephen was 58 when he died 17 May 1730, then he was born about 1672. If Kezia was age 77 when she died 20 April 1764, she was born c. 1686 (g.s. Old Storrs Cemetary, Mansfield CT). This woul dmake Stephen a father at 16, almost unheard of in those days. Note that Stephen did not name Kezia in his will.
"An alternative theory is that she is Deborah's illegitimate daughter. Deborah wuld have been 18 at the time of Kezia's birth and would not marry for another 7 years. Deborah's father does name her in his will and almost certainly raised her."

Occupation: JL Prescott Company, which manufactured stove polish
JL moved the family to North Berwick, ME, about the time he started the JL Prescott
Co., which manufactured stove polish. The company flourished (branching
out into, among other things, steam automobiles) and he eventually moved
it to Passaic, NJ. Meanwhile, this family had become members of the
Seventh Day Adventist Church while they were in Penacook, NH. I don't
know how widespread this was among the Prescotts generally, but at least
JL and his family and his parents were members. Of course, they began
(in 1842) as members of one of the Baptist millenarian cults which had
sprung up and which predicted the end of the world in 1844. As JL
reports in the obituary he wrote for the SDA newspaper about his mother,
Lydia's, death, she was "among those who suffered great disappointment
in the passing of time in 1844." Some of these groups pulled together
after the "great disappointment" in 1844 and formed the SDA church.
JL's son William Warren became a significant figure with the church,
serving as president of several SDA colleges, and touring the world as a
missionary. The church had a headquarters in Takoma Park, which is how
JL and Harriet ended up there.
