married 2d at Salem 12 Oct. 1704 Lydia (Ropes) Gale. Wells mill-owner 1713; chosen Deacon 3 Mar. 1717-8. Lists 39, 269ac. Will, 19 July (died at Wells 26 Aug.) 1737; wife Lydia (died at Wells 6 Mar. 1746), 3 children. Two of four children
reported killed were Sarah, born at Newbury 9 Mar. 1698-9, and Joshua, born at Wells 9 Oct. 1701. Children by 2d wife, recorded at Newbury, all in will: Nathaniel, born 21 Aug. 1705, married 26 May 1736 Dorothy Light (4); Joshua, born 6 Mar.

Thomas (11) (s/o Dea. Thomas 10), born 11 Jan. 1646-7. Of Amesbury, granted administration of brother John (5)'s estate with eldest brother Nathaniel of Ipswich and John's widow Sarah; administration to the widow alone 4 Dec. 1677. Bought in
Wells 1667-1669; of Wells in Dec. 1669. "Minister of the town of Kittery" when John Tucker made his will 31 Oct. 1670. He served Kittery about a year, and Mr. Francis Hooke was called chiefly responsible for his removing; see Doc. Hist. 4: 338;
Y. D. 6: 36. Long minister at Amesbury, where he died 10 July 1734. He was one of the first to receive an honorary degree from Harvard College, and possibly once of the class od 1669, but not a graduate. See Hoyt's Salisbury i: 351 for ten
children by wife Mary (Perkins, married 10 Jan. 1669), including Luke, born 19 Mar. 1673-4, Lists 67, 336b, 96 (carried away by Indians in 1697).

NOTE: After birth of Christopher, child #3, family moved to adjoining hamlet of Rigsby, 2 miles west of Alford. Rigsby Church is now a chapel attached to Alford. The registers were transferred to the custody of the incumbent of Alford, but

all records before 1686 were reported lost. Those preserved, were of no value for purpose of investigation. While reviewing Alford volumes, 2 leaves of parchment proved to be portions of the early Rigsby registers covering time from 18 Jan

1617-16 Sep 1621. The last burial recorded was that of Christopher, infant son of William Wentworth & Susannah Carter. This explains the disappearance of the Wentworth name from Alford registers aft 1620. ("English Origins of New England

this William, the eldest son of Christopher Wentworth and Catherine Marbury.

The first mention of him in the Alford register is in the record of his marriage, which took place 28 November 1614. The name of his wife is given as Susanna Fleming. She was, however, a widow; and an examination of the register, confirmed by

Wills, reveals the following facts: her maiden name was Carter, and she was the daughter o;f Edward Carter, of Well, a small village two miles southwest of Alford. On the 1st of July 1613, she was married at Alford to Uther Fleming, son of

Robert Fleming, of Alford, and his wife Jane. This Robert Fleming, who died in 1599, calls himself, in his Will, a shoemaker. Uther Fleming lived little more than six months after his marriage, as he was buried at Alford 22 January 1613-14;

and on the 29 May following, their only child, a poshumous daughter named Anne, was baptized. This child was buried at Alford in 1619. Six months later the young widow married William Wentworth.

According to the Alford registers their eldest child was baptized on the 15th of March 1615-16, and was named William. On the 18th of January 1617-18, another son was baptized, named Edward. A third son was baptized at Alford, 4 June 1620, and

was named Christopher.

After this last date the ame of Wentworth disappears entirely from the Alford register; and it is evident that the family removed shortly after to the adjoining hamlet of Rigsby, two miles west from Alford, for in the Rigsby register occurs

the burial of the third son, christopher, under the date of 18 May 1621.

©†thelwulf, king of the West Saxons in England, son of Egbert, and father of Alfred. He was overking of Kent (with Surrey, Sussex, and Essex) and apparently of Mercia and East Anglia. He had acted as underking of Kent (828? - 838?) before his father's death in 839. He was compelled to defend his country against the invasion of the Danes and, with his son ©†thelbald, won a notable victory over them in 851. He also seems to have campaigned against the Welsh. In 855 he went to Rome on pilgrimage. Later (856?) he took as his second wife Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald of France. It is said that this marriage was one of the causes of an obscure revolt led by ©†thelbald. It is also said that ©†thelwulf withdrew to the East, where he died, leaving the kingdom in the West to ©†thelbald, the kingdom in the East to ©†thelbert. ©†thelwulf seems to have given generously to the Church. He is a shadowy, half -legendary figure.

History of Industry

He succeeded his father in business at West's Mills and for many years was one of the most prominent business men in town. He was known everywhere as Squire West. He built the two-story house at West's Mills which is still known as the Squire West house, and was the first postmaster at that place. He died from injuries sustained by a fall from his cart.
