Frank was in his early twenties when he first came to the Pepperell area as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, assigned to help with the cleanup workfollowing the devastating floods of 1937.<br><br>While attending St. Joseph’s Church, he met Frances Cotton, and Pepperell began to look rather more appealing than his native Tewksbury, or Charlestown, where he grew up. He decided to stay,and married Frances in 1941. They purchased their Hollis Street home in 1945, and raised four children there; by the time of his death, 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren had joined the family.<br><br>After 25 years of employment with the Bemis Bag Company, Frank went to work as an independent plumber, and became Pepperell’s part-time Plumbing Inspector in 1976. He held that position into2004.<br><br>Frank was an avid gardener and antique collector. He was a dedicated Town employee; a prudent and careful inspector who was considerate of homeowners and contractors alike; a lover of the Town of Pepperell; and a gentleman of the old school.

"About the same time, in the northern end of the State, another poet was sighing over the sad fate that condemned her to live and die unappreciated. Sarah Lett was born in Chatham, Ontario, in 1824, afflicted with a frail body, and, in her early years, an impediment in speech. Nevertheless she possessed an intelligent mind and a poetic nature, as the sequel showed. Having lost both father and mother, the remnant of the family, after various wanderings, drifted to the northern part of LaSalle County, where Sara married a young farmer named Cotteau, whose family had settled a short distance from the Lett homestead.
Being of a sensitive disposition, she lived among her books and flowers, as quiet a life as was compatible with the manifold duties of a pioneer farmer's wife; reading her weekly newspaper at night by the light of fireplace and tallow candle. And all the while, she was singing blithely or sadly, her own little songs, almost as spontaneously and unconsciously as the birds sang in the trees about her door. Some of these little poems found a haven in the columns of the weekly newspapers of the day, and a few were set to music, that she never heard sung.
She sang of the every-day things that hedged her in-of her joys and sorrows, but most of all she sang of patriotism-of the heroes of her own Canadian home, of her adopted country's flag,' of the gallant deeds of the boys in blue, of the sorrow and pity of slavery and oppression everywhere. That she longed for a larger audience and more intelligent appreciation is shown by her half-ironical, half-sad author's preface:
"Oh, isn't it hard to be a poet,
And live and die, and let nobody know it!
To sing your songs to the passing breeze,
Or jot them down when nobody sees,-
Poor little pitiful things like these!"
Years after her death, her poems were painstakingly gathered from hither and yon, by her daughter, Ida Cotteau, of whom she sang, as a child:
"She stood by the pasture bars, And she looked so pretty and sweet; Her eyes were like luminous stars; There was dust on her little bare feet."
The problem of finding a publisher for the little old-fashioned songs, was solved by means of an advertisement in a Chicago paper; and, after half a lifetime, (Dr. Sarah) Ida Cotteau had the satisfaction of completing her labor of love, and only just in time, for, a few weeks ago, she, too, passed away.
The poetry of early Illinois may need an occasional twist in the pronunciation to help out a rhyme, or it may now and then be necessary to use artificial means to keep its metrical feet from "interfering," but three characteristics it undoubtedly possessed-religious fervor, patriotism and appreciation of the beauties of nature.
That some of our early Illinois poets were crude in their manner of expressing the message that clamored "to be heard of mankind," there is no use denying; but, when all is said and done, I doubt very much whether the newspaper jingles of the present day will stand very much higher in the estimation of coming generations than those perpetrated by our forefathers and mothers.
Our aim nowadays, seems to be solely to amuse, but these pioneer verses, almost without exception, bring in their hands some underlying admonition, precept or moral to justify their presence upon the sea of literature. It may be more practical to hitch your Pegasus to a fence-post, but even the frustrated attempt to hitch him to a star ought to be more uplifting."

History of Industry
Captain Peter West came to the town of Farmington in 1791, where he remained several years and then removed to Hallowell. He was a carpenter by trade, and at the latter place he built a small vessel which he named "Bonaparte" in honor of the great French leader. He began a clearing on a lot of land, now the site of West's Mills Village, in 1797, erected a log cabin the following year and soonafter moved his family to their new home. He was a very active, resolute man, possessing much intellectual ability but very eccentricin some respects.
Captain West was selectman and treasurer after the incorporation of the town, and was a man of influence among theearly settlers. In 1803 he was chosen chairman of a committee, with Daniel Luce and Sprowel Norton as associates, to negotiate with Francis Cabot Lowell for the purchase of the Mile-and-a-half Strip. Though reputed to have been worth eight hundred dollars when he came to town, he was reduced to the verge of bankruptcy by failure of this venture. He died quite suddenly, as did his wife.

History of Industry
He succeeded his father in business at West's Mills and for many years was one of the most prominent business men in town. He was known everywhere as Squire West. He built the two-story house at West's Mills which is still known as the Squire West house, and was the first postmaster at that place. He died from injuries sustained by a fall from his cart.

Lansil, Clifford L. Jr.<br>The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clifford L. Lansil, Jr. (MCSN: 645901), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepiditywhile serving with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 28 November 1950. When his machine gun section suffered heavy casualties during an attack by his company against a strong hostile force, Corporal Lansil immediately assumed the responsibility of leader and reorganized his section. Bravely exposing himself to direct hostile small arms and machine gun fire, he moved along the front lines to locate and spot enemy gun positions so that accurate fire could be brought to bear. During a furious counterattack by the enemy, he continually moved from one gun position to another, supervising and directing effective fire toinflict heavy casualties among the fanatical aggressors. By his daring initiative, determined leadership and cool courage in the face of heavy odds, Corporal Lansil contributed materially to the successful repulse of the enemy and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. NASHUA, N.H. \endash Freda E. (Cotton) Roderick, 72, died June 24, 2006, at Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington, Mass., after a brief illness. Mrs. Roderick was born Sept. 18, 1933, in Millinocket, daughter of Phillip C. and Louise (Hanson) Cotton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Millinocket and was a graduate of Stearns High School. She lived in Millinocket until 1968, and was a resident of Milford, N.H. from 1970 to 2004. She was the wife of the late Charles Roderick, to whom she was married for 27 years. She was a loving mother, devoted grandmother and recently became a great-grandmother. She enjoyed baking, knitting and crocheting, shopping on the home shopping channels and visits from her family. Mrs. Roderick worked for several years at EPVA in Wilton, N.H. In 1977, she completed cosmetology training and began working in salons at Almy's and later at Montgomery Ward, before purchasing her own salon in the Nashua Mall Annex. She owned Shear Image Beauty Salon. She retired in 1989, due to health concerns. She was predeceased by her son, Bryant Carter, who died in 1994; three brothers, Roland, Harley and Lloyd Cotton; three sisters, Olive McCollum, Ruth Ferreira and June Hancock. Survivors include four sons and two daughters-in-law, Dudley and Kathleen Carter of Nashua, N.H., Roland and Linda Carter of Merrimack, N.H., Mark Carter and Tracey Carter, both of Nashua, N.H.; two sisters, Inez Bowles of Hendersonville, N.C. and Arlene Carlstrom of Bangor; a brother, Ronald Cotton of Medway; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins; two close nieces, Dorothy Brown of Lowell, Mass. and Joannie Perry of Ashburnham, Mass.; and close friend, Gail Tucker of Milford.
