Marie Turmel was born at St Claire, Dorchester, Quebec, Jan 28, 1901, the daughter of Joseph and Octavie Lamontagne laPointe She was educated in Quebec schools. She married Antonia Turmel of St
Anseime, Quebec. They were married Feb 12, 1923. The couple ran a farm on Turmel Road in Jay for many years. He died Aug 30, 1971. Mrs. Turmel was a member of the Ladies of St Ann, Our Lady of the Blue Army, and a daily communicant of St Rose of Lima Church.
She is survived by six sons, Real Turmel, Houston, Texas, Guy Turmel, Livermore Falls, Ulric Turmel, East Millinocket, Bertrand Turmel, Jay, Emery Turmel, New York, NY, and Joseph Turmel, Mojav, Calif; five daughters, Mrs Rhea Cornelio, Jay, Liette Elskamp, Los Angeles, Calif, Mrs Armance Rich, York, Mrs. Viola Aldrich, Norway, and Mrs Marie Poulin, Jay; two sisters Mrs Claire Dery, Quebec City Quebec, and Mrs. Lea Mercier, Abitibbiti, Quebec; 39 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
General Notes: Child - Ulric Stanislas Turmel
EAST MILLINOCKET \endash Ulric Stanislas Turmel, 81, left this earth Dec. 4, 2009, to be reunited in eternity with our Lord Jesus Christ. Ulric passed away surrounded by the comfort and love of his family at his home. He was born Aug. 2, 1928, in Chisholm, the son of Antonio and Marie Turmel. Ulric married the love of his life, Nancy Louise Hoag, Aug. 14, 1948. They moved from Livermore Falls to East Millinocket in 1954, when Ulric began working as a papermaker at Great Northern Paper Co. During this time, the mill was undergoing a major expansion, which also included the installation of the No. 5 and No. 6 paper machines. When the No. 5 machine was ready to start, Ulric transferred from the grinder room to the paper room, where he worked his way to shift supervisor. In the early-1970s, when Great Northern's Millinocket mill built its new Vertiforma paper machine No. 11, Ulric went to Millinocket for several years as one of the foremen, and stayed in that position through the entire build and startup. Upon completion of the project, he returned to his position in the East Millinocket mill. In 1974 he became the day foreman of 5 and 6, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. He was well known in the industry as an extraordinary papermaker, but more importantly, he was loved and respected by all who worked with him. He had the gift to bring out the best in people, especially in dire situations. Many of those who were fortunate enough to work under his supervision went on to become exemplary papermakers and individuals. Ulric had a lifelong love for the north woods of Maine. He loved to fish for landlocked salmon, and every spring he enjoyed smelting on the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Many a season he would climb to the top of Mount Katahdin with his family and revel in its grandeur. Maine appealed to his independent spirit, and he could be found repairing his camp's dock in the summer or snowmobiling in the winter. Ulric's strong work ethic and loyalty to family were the foundation of his life. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, and loved nothing more than a good lobster feed at his camp on Ambajejus Lake surrounded by all. His strength, courage and devotion will be greatly missed by those who loved him. He is survived by his three children: daughter, Claudia Oliver and her husband, Wesley, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and her daughters, Chris and Allie; daughter, Mary Nattress and her husband, Clarke, of Benedicta and their children, Nehemiah, Naomi, Noah and Natalia; and son, Eric Turmel and Deborah Beaulieu of Millinocket, parents of Trever and Caleb. Ulric is also survived by five of his 10 brothers and sisters, Viola Aldrich, Joseph Turmel, Liette Elskamp, Bertrand Turmel and Armance Rich. Ulric was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Louise Hoag, Aug. 27, 2003; and his siblings, Real Turmel, Emery Turmel, Rhea Cornelio, Marie Poulin and Guy Turmel.

Sir William de la Pole of Hull (died 1366) was a wealthy wool merchant in Kingston upon Hull, a royal moneylender and a Chief Baron of the Exchequer.
Life
Sir William and his (probably older) brother Sir Richard de la Pole (died 1345) were merchants at Hull by 1317, importing Gascon wines. From 1317, they were deputies of the Royal Chief Butler. From 1321, they were collectors of customs and chamberlains of the town. With the accession of Edward III (then under the tutelage of Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella), war with Scotland was resumed. They loaned the pair large sums of money in 1327, and in return Richard received the appointment of Chief Butler of England. When the Bardi, Edward's Florentine bankers were unable to lend the king money to pay his troops, the Pole brothers did so. They were owed £13,482 by February 1329.
Contrary to earlier suggestions, they did not lose power with Mortimer's fall, but their wealth meant they could not be totally excluded from the government of Edward III. Richard continued to attend court at a time when Mortimer's supporters were absent. In July 1331, the brothers divided their assets. Richard was again Chief Butler of England from 1333 to 1338. He was an alderman of London from 1330 to 1340 (when he was knighted), but died in 1345. His son William is principally known as a Northamptonshire landowner.
In 1331 Sir William persuaded the king to make Hull into an autonomous borough, instead of having a royal warden. On the death of the last warden in 1333, the brothers took over the royal property there and Sir William became Mayor of Hull, a post which he filled for the next 4 years. He also represented the city of Hull in five sessions of Parliament (March 1332, September 1334, May 1335, September 1336, and February 1338).
He continued financing Edward's Scottish wars but also bought much property in Yorkshire and Durham. His trading activities included the large scale export of wool to Dortrecht, but he and his partners abused the right of compulsory purchase that they were granted, smuggling wool, and thus ruined the financing of the king's campaigns in the Netherlands in 1338-40.
As a result of this, he and his associates were arrested after the king's return in November 1340, and deprived of the property. However, he was released in May 1342 and the proceedings were quashed, probably because the king needed his help financially. He organised a new company, which managed the Customs and lent vast sums to the king, also buying up royal debts at a large discount. He withdrew from the company in 1345. The company continued, and financed the Crécy campaign and the Siege of Calais, but were ruined as a result of the Black Death. He escaped liability for the debts of the now bankrupt company. However, the prosecution of 1341 was revived, and Sir William only escaped by renouncing all debts due from the crown. This, however, still left him a wealthy man. He died in May 1366, five months after his son Michael was summoned to Parliament as a peer.

The origins of Sir William are obscure. His father's name is not certainly known but may have been William. His mother Elena remarried John Rotenheryng. Some genealogical tables indicate Sir William was related to the old Mathrafal ruling house of Powys Wenwynwyn. However, there is no concrete evidence whatever of this alleged relationship, though those princes' descendants used the surname de la Pole (i.e. "of the Pool", referring to their case to Welshpool). This surname was no doubt not exceptional.

William de la Pole is the name of several prominent Englishmen in the 14

Sir William de la Pole (The Elder)
Sir William de la Pole (the elder) was a merchant in Kingston-upon-Hull a
nd Ravenser Odd. He was the eldest son of Owen ap Griffith de la Pole (ali
as Owain ap Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn and was therefore the great-grands
on of Gwenwynwyn ab Owain the last ruling Tywysog of the Welsh princelyre

Sir William de la Pole (The Younger)
Sir William de la Pole (the younger) (d. 1366) was a wealthy merchant in K
ingston-upon-Hull and Ravenser Odd, a royal moneylender and baron of the E
xchequer.
Sir William was, along with his older brother Sir Richard de la Pole, a st
rong supporter of the government of Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella. Th
ey loaned the pair large sums of money in 1327, and in return received app
ointment as gaugers of wine throughout England, and control of custo
ms in Hull and later in London. They lost some of these posts after Mortim
er's fall, but their wealth meant they could be totally excluded from t
he government of Edward III.
In 1332 Sir William convinced the king to convert the office of chief magi
strate of Hull to Lord Mayor of Hull, a post which he filled for the ne
xt 4 years. He also represented the city of Hull in five sessions of parli
ament (March 1332, September 1334, May 1336, September 1336, and Februa
ry 1338).
During this time he continued as the king's financier, and in 1339 he w
as appointed second baron of the exchequer. The next year, however, Edwa
rd III had him arrested and imprisoned. He was convicted, though the charg
es were annulled by Parliament in 1344.

There is an avenue (de la Pole avenue) located in the west of Kingston up
on Hull named after Sir William.
